The #1 cause of swollen legs is accumulation of fluids in the tissues (subcutaneous fat, muscles, and blood vessels) of the legs. This happens when there is excessive pressure in the drainage system of the legs called the venous system. This excessive venous pressure over time causes the valves in the veins to become dysfunctional and the veins to bulge, dilate and start leaking fluid out into the tissues.

In order to treat this condition properly, one has to:

1. First treat and get rid of venous hypertension (caused by heart disease, kidney disease and pulmonary hypertension secondary to obstructive sleep apnea and COPD)
2. Then get rid of the dysfunctional, engorged, and insufficient superficial leg veins by variety of techniques, the most important of which is the closure of the great saphenous vein
